Questions people ask

Are the facts right?

Smart Chalk is told to stick to well-established facts for your grade, and the lesson outline and full script are shown next to every video so you can check them. Always watch a video before showing it, the same way you'd preview any video. You can delete one any time.

How do students sign in?

They go to the student page, type your class code, tap their name and type their 4-digit PIN. You add their names (first name and last initial is plenty) and print sign-in cards. No student emails or passwords.

Do you track students watching videos?

Only to mark the assignment done. For videos played on Smart Chalk, it counts once a student has played most of it (skipping to the end doesn't count). Videos that open on YouTube count as done when the student opens them. We don't track anything else, and we never show students ads.

Where do the videos come from?

Smart Chalk makes them. Search any topic, like "the US Constitution", and you get the whole unit, split into lessons. Each lesson uses a video from our library or our YouTube channel if we have one. If we don't, Smart Chalk writes, draws and narrates one in a few minutes, adds it to the library and the channel, and the next person gets it free. Teacher plans have no limit on videos.

Can I share the videos?

Yes: play them in class, assign them, or share the link. Many are also on the Smart Chalk YouTube channel. Quizzes, tests, worksheets and study guides are yours to print and use however you like.

Is there a free version?

Anyone can watch the video library free, and students never pay for their class. Making and assigning lessons takes the teacher plan: $9.99 a month or $89 a year. Schools pay $89 per teacher a year. The Smart Chalk tutor is $4.99 a month for anyone.

Can I get the lesson as slides?

Yes. Every video comes with a free, editable PowerPoint: the same slides and drawings, key words, the quiz and its answers, with what to say in the speaker notes. It opens in PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides. You can also make slides from any topic, which uses 1 quiz credit.

What is Ask Smart Chalk?

A separate homework-help plan that anyone can get, like a tutor on call: paste any question (or snap a photo) and Smart Chalk answers it. Turn on Tutor mode and it walks you through how it got the answer, step by step. It's $4.99 a month for up to 1,000 questions a month (150 a day), and you can cancel any time. It's included with every teacher plan. Anyone 13 and up can sign up, and kids under 13 use a parent's account. See Ask Smart Chalk.

I'm a tutor. Does it work for one student?

Yes. Make a class for each student (you can have up to 30), or keep everyone in one class and assign work to just the students who need it. Each student signs in with your class code and their own PIN, and their work is graded for you.

What languages does it work in?

Nine: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Indonesian. The website opens in your browser's language (change it at the top or bottom of any page). Pick a language when you search a topic and the videos' narration and board, captions, quizzes, homework, worksheets, study guides, lesson plan and slides are all in that language. Students can answer in either language and grading still works.

Does it work with Google Classroom?

Yes. Every assignment has a Google Classroom button that posts it to your class stream. Students tap it, their class code is already filled in, and after their PIN they land right on the work. Library videos can be shared the same way.

What if I run out of quizzes or videos?

Library videos never run out: they're free. Your quiz credits and new videos refill on the 1st of every month. If you need more before then, buy an extra materials pack from your studio: $5 or $12, one-time, and it's good for 12 months. If your school pays for you, each teacher has a fair share of the school's allowance; your school admin can raise yours or buy extra credits for everyone.

How do I cancel?

From your studio, choose Manage plan to turn off renewal. You keep your plan until the end of the year you paid for.
