Who Smart Chalk is for
Smart Chalk accounts are for teachers, tutors and homeschool parents, 18 and over. Teachers add their students and give them a class code and PIN. You confirm you're allowed to use Smart Chalk with your students under your school's rules.
Student information
For each student we keep only the name the teacher types (we suggest first name and last initial), their PIN, their answers and grades, and which assigned videos they watched. We don't ask students for emails, birthdays or anything else, we don't show ads to students, and we never sell student information. Teachers can remove a student, and everything about them, at any time. Written answers are checked by our AI provider to grade them; student names are never sent with them.
What you make
Quizzes, tests, homework and study guides you make are yours to print, edit and use in your teaching. Smart Chalk is made with AI: watch every video and check every answer key before using it with students.
YouTube
Smart Chalk uses YouTube API Services to publish Smart Chalk lesson videos on the Smart Chalk YouTube channel. By using Smart Chalk, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Our privacy policy explains what YouTube data we use, and Google's is in the Google Privacy Policy.
Ask Smart Chalk
Smart Chalk Homeschool is a separate subscription, billed monthly until you cancel: $29 a month per child, or a family pack of $79 a month for up to 6 children, in Kindergarten to Grade 12. When you add or remove children or switch plans, Stripe charges or credits the difference for the rest of the month. Cancel any time; it stays on until the end of the month you paid for, and we don't give partial refunds. Every lesson in the year plan comes with a video from the Smart Chalk library or YouTube channel; when a topic has no video yet, Smart Chalk makes one when you get that week ready, and it joins the library and channel for everyone. New lesson videos come from a monthly allowance (40 per child, or 160 for the family pack), which covers a full month of lessons; library and YouTube videos never count, and if the allowance runs out, the rest are made after the 1st. It also includes extra videos for your own topics in the studio (5 a month per child, or 10 for the family pack), 30 extra quiz credits and AI grading for your children's work. You are your children's teacher and responsible for following your state's or country's homeschool laws. Smart Chalk provides curriculum and tools; it is not a school and is not accredited, and report cards and certificates are issued by your home school, not by Smart Chalk. Year plans are written with AI: check they fit your children and any standards you follow. An account with a teacher or school plan can't also have the homeschool plan.
The Smart Chalk tutor is a subscription of $4.99 a month, billed monthly until you cancel. It's also included with teacher plans and with each teacher a school or district pays for. Cancel any time; it stays on until the end of the month you paid for, and we don't give partial refunds. It includes up to 1,000 questions a month and up to 150 a day per account. It also includes short lesson videos on the topics you ask about. Study mode turns your notes, a photo, or your saved answers into flashcards or a practice test, and each one uses one question. In the Chrome extension, fixing an essay uses one question for every 500 words; it fixes grammar, formatting and the citations you wrote, but you're responsible for your work, your sources and following your school's rules. Videos come from the Smart Chalk library and YouTube channel; when a topic has none yet, Smart Chalk may make one, which then joins the library and channel for everyone. Extra question packs are one-time purchases, used after the monthly questions, and expire 12 months after purchase; they're only usable while you're subscribed. You must be 13 or older to subscribe, and if you're under 18 you need a parent's or guardian's permission. Children under 13 may use it only through a parent's or guardian's account. Answers are written by AI and can be wrong, so check anything important, and follow your school's rules about getting help with homework and tests.
Smart Chalk videos
Lesson videos made with Smart Chalk use the Smart Chalk look, character and brand, and they stay on Smart Chalk. You may play them in your classroom, assign them to your students, and share their Smart Chalk links. You may not download, re-upload or post them on YouTube, TikTok, other video sites or social media, or use them in anything you sell.
For every video made at your request or shared by you, you give Smart Chalk the right to publish it, edit it and earn money from it as Smart Chalk content, on the Smart Chalk YouTube channel and other Smart Chalk channels, forever and worldwide. Smart Chalk posts these videos under its own name: they are not credited to you, and you are not paid for them. Any money YouTube or others pay for them belongs to Smart Chalk. New videos join the library and may be posted on the Smart Chalk YouTube channel automatically. If you think a video should be taken down, report it or contact us.
The video library
Smart Chalk videos live in one shared library. When you search a topic, you can use any library video free. When there isn't one yet, Smart Chalk makes a new video, which uses one of your monthly new videos and joins the library as a Smart Chalk video for every teacher. Don't put students' names or private details in your topic or notes. (Videos made before this change stay private unless you shared them.)
Keeping the library safe
Only share videos that are accurate and right for a classroom. Any teacher can report a video. We may take down videos that are reported or that break these terms, and close accounts that misuse Smart Chalk.
School and district plans
A school plan covers up to the number of teachers on the plan for one year from payment. Teachers in a school share a monthly allowance of videos, quiz credits and auto-graded answers. Invoices are due in 30 days; teachers can use Smart Chalk while an invoice is open, and use pauses if it's more than two weeks overdue. Card plans renew yearly until canceled. A school admin can add and remove teachers; teachers keep their own classes and grades if they leave. We'll review and sign a reasonable student data privacy agreement on request.
Extra materials packs
Extra materials packs are one-time purchases of extra quiz credits and new-video requests. They're used only after your monthly allowance (or, in a school, your monthly share and the school's allowance) runs out, and they expire 12 months after purchase; buying another pack moves the expiry for everything in that account to 12 months from then. A teacher's pack stays with the teacher; a school's pack can be used by any teacher in the school. Packs need an active plan to use, and aren't refundable or transferable. In a school, each teacher can use up to two seats' worth of the shared monthly allowance unless the school admin sets a different limit.
Plans and billing
The teacher plan is $89 a year, paid upfront, and renews yearly until you cancel. There is no free plan; students use it free through their teacher's class. Cancel any time from your studio; renewal stops and you keep your plan until the end of the year you paid for. We don't give partial refunds for unused months. Monthly limits reset at the start of each calendar month and unused videos don't roll over.
